My daughter was tired more than usual. Her diet looked fine on paper, but I started questioning whether the iron she was eating was actually being absorbed.
The gap between eating iron and absorbing it
Plant-based iron is non-haem iron, which the body absorbs less efficiently than the haem iron found in meat. Absorption can be improved significantly by pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C, and reduced by consuming calcium or tannins at the same meal. This is not complicated in theory, but it requires deliberate meal construction.
Three changes I made
- Added a small portion of capsicum or kiwifruit alongside lentil-based meals
- Moved the afternoon tea with milk to at least 90 minutes after iron-rich lunch
- Switched from black tea with dinner to herbal tea or water
After six weeks I noticed her energy improved during after-school activities. I cannot attribute this solely to the dietary changes — sleep and other factors shift constantly with kids — but the timing aligned closely enough to keep the habits going.
A note on testing
If you are genuinely concerned about iron levels in a child, a blood test is the only reliable measure. Dietary adjustments are worth making, but they are not a substitute for knowing actual ferritin numbers. I got a test done before and after, which made the whole experiment more grounded than guesswork.
